James Clavell, born Charles Edmund Dumaresq Clavell (10 October 1924 – 7 September 1994) was an Australian (later naturalized American) novelist, screenwriter, director and World War II veteran and prisoner of war. Clavell is best known for his epic Asian Saga series of novels and their televised adaptations, along with such films as The Great Escape and To Sir, with Love.

Alfred Gough (/ˈɡɒf/ GOF; born August 22, 1967) is an American screenwriter, producer, writer, director, showrunner and creator. He is the developer of The WB/The CW’s Superman-prequel television series Smallville. Alongside longtime writing/producing partner Miles Millar, Gough co-created other television programs like AMC’s 2015 wuxia-influenced dystopian television series Into the Badlands, MTV’s 2016 epic fantasy television series The Shannara Chronicles (based on The Sword of Shannara Trilogy book trilogy by Terry Brooks) and Netflix’s Wednesday, the Tim Burton-helmed Addams Family spin-off. Among his feature film credits he wrote or produced are Shanghai Noon and its sequel Shanghai Knights, Spider-Man 2, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, Herbie: Fully Loaded, Hannah Montana: The Movie and Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

Sean Baker (born February 26, 1971) is an American filmmaker. He is best known for directing independent feature films about the lives of sex workers, including Take Out (2004), Starlet (2012), Tangerine (2015), The Florida Project (2017), Red Rocket (2021), and Anora (2024), the last of which won him the Palme d’Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, as well as Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing. George Raymond Richard Martin (born George Raymond Martin; September 20, 1948), also known as G.R.R.M., is an American author, television writer, and television producer. He is best known as the author of the series of epic fantasy novels A Song of Ice and Fire, which was adapted into the Primetime Emmy Award-winning television series Game of Thrones (2011–2019) and its prequel series House of the Dragon (2022–present). He also helped create the Wild Cards anthology series and contributed to worldbuilding for the video game Elden Ring (2022).
In 2005, Lev Grossman of Time called Martin “the American Tolkien,” and in 2011, he was included on the annual Time 100 list of the most influential people in the world. Martin has lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico, for a long time, where he helped fund Meow Wolf and owns the Jean Cocteau Cinema. The city commemorates March 29 as George R. R. Martin Day.

Darren Aronofsky (born February 12, 1969) is an American filmmaker. His films are noted for their surreal, melodramatic, and often disturbing elements, frequently in the form of psychological fiction. Over his career, he has received a Primetime Emmy Award. He has been nominated for several awards including an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, and a Golden Globe Award.
Aronofsky studied film and social anthropology at Harvard University before studying directing at the AFI Conservatory. After completing his senior thesis film, Supermarket Sweep, he won several film awards, becoming a National Student Academy Award finalist. In 1997, he founded the film and TV production company Protozoa Pictures. His feature film debut, the surrealist psychological thriller Pi (1998), earned him the Directing Award at the Sundance Film Festival and an Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay.
Aronofsky then directed the psychological drama Requiem for a Dream (2000), the romantic fantasy sci-fi drama The Fountain (2006), and the sports drama The Wrestler (2008), the latter of which earned the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. He directed the psychological drama Black Swan(2010), earning him the Best Director. His later films include the biblical epic Noah (2014), the psychological horror film Mother! (2017) and the drama The Whale (2022). Aronofsky’s film Postcard from Earth (2023) was produced and filmed exclusively for the Sphere in the Las Vegas Valley on its 16K resolution screen.

Rúnar Rúnarsson (born 20 January 1977; Reykjavík) is an Icelandic screenwriter and director. Films for which he is credited as both writer and director include the feature film Volcano and the short films Anna, Two Birds, and The Last Farm (which was nominated for an Oscar). His second feature, Sparrows, is a coming-of-age story that was released in 2015. In 2019 his film Echo was released which comprises 56 vignettes to draw a portrait of modern-day Iceland at Christmas time.

Martin Charles Scorsese (/skɔːrˈsɛsi/ skor-SESS-ee, Italian: [skorˈseːze, -se]; born November 17, 1942) is an American filmmaker. One of the major figures of the New Hollywood era, he has received many accolades, including an Academy Award, four BAFTA Awards, three Emmy Awards, a Grammy Award, and three Golden Globe Awards. He has been honoured with the AFI Life Achievement Award in 1997, the Film Society of Lincoln Center tribute in 1998, the Kennedy Center Honor in 2007, the Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2010, and the BAFTA Fellowship in 2012. Four of his films have been inducted into the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant”.
Scorsese received a Master of Arts degree from New York University’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development in 1968. His directorial debut, Who’s That Knocking at My Door(1967), was accepted into the Chicago Film Festival. In the 1970s and 1980s, Scorsese’s films, much influenced by his Italian-American background and upbringing in New York City, centred on macho-posturing men and explored crime, machismo, nihilism and Catholic concepts of guilt and redemption. His trademark styles of extensive use of slow motion and freeze frames, voice-over narration, graphic depictions of extreme violence and liberal use of profanity were first shown in Mean Streets (1973).
Scorsese won the Palme d’Or at Cannes with Taxi Driver (1976), which starred Robert De Niro as a disturbed Vietnam Veteran. De Niro became associated with Scorsese through eight more films, including New York, New York (1977), Raging Bull (1980), The King of Comedy (1982), Goodfellas (1990), Casino (1995) and The Irishman (2019). In the following decades, he garnered box office success with a series of collaborations with Leonardo DiCaprio, including Gangs of New York (2002), The Aviator (2004), The Departed (2006), Shutter Island (2010), and The Wolf of Wall Street (2013). He worked with both De Niro and DiCaprio on Killers of the Flower Moon (2023). He also directed After Hours (1985), The Color of Money (1986), The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), The Age of Innocence (1993), Kundun (1997), Hugo (2011), and Silence (2016).
On television, he has directed episodes for the HBO series Boardwalk Empire (2010–2014) and Vinyl (2016), as well as the HBO documentary Public Speaking (2010) and the Netflix docu-series Pretend It’s a City (2021). He has also directed several rock documentaries, including The Last Waltz (1978), No Direction Home (2005), and Shine a Light (2008). He has explored film history in the documentaries A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies(1995) and My Voyage to Italy (1999). An advocate for film preservation and restoration, he has founded three nonprofit organisations: The Film Foundation in 1990, the World Cinema Foundation in 2007 and the African Film Heritage Project in 2017.
